Street Repair Project: What Was Approved (and What It Means)

Following recent discussions between the Board and the Street Commission, here’s a closer look at the street repair project and what work has been approved based on the contractor’s bid.

At the April 16 meeting, the Board announced an approved and signed contract with E. Meier Contracting Inc. totaling $41,480. This total reflects a combination of selected base work and one additional option from the bid.

What Work Was Selected

The approved project includes three components:

1. Base Bid: Milling & Repaving (2” Asphalt)

• Location: #13–#22

• Cost: $23,100

What this means: The existing road surface will be ground down (milled) by about 2 inches, debris removed, and replaced with new asphalt for a smooth, refreshed driving surface.

2. Base Repair (Deeper Asphalt Repair)

• Location: #19–#21

• Cost: $2,040

What this means: In this section, the underlying road base is more deteriorated. Crews will remove an additional 4 inches of material and rebuild the base before repaving. This is a more intensive repair meant to address structural issues.

3. Added Option: Milling & Repaving (2” Asphalt)

• Location: #8–#76

• Cost: $16,340

What this means: Similar to the first section, this area will also be milled and repaved with new asphalt.

How to Read “Milling & Paving”

Some residents may be wondering what “mill and pave” actually involves. In general, this process:

• Removes the top layer of worn asphalt

• Applies a bonding layer (tack coat)

• Lays new asphalt and compacts it for a smooth finish

It improves surface quality and extends the life of the roadway without fully reconstructing it.

Timeline & Communication

Work is expected to begin in May or June, and residents in affected areas will be notified as the schedule is finalized.
