Chickens in Bellerive Acres? Here’s What the New Rules Say

At the December 18, 2025 Board of Aldermen meeting, the City adopted a new ordinance regulating the keeping of domestic fowl within Bellerive Acres. Under this ordinance, “domestic fowl” is defined as hens only—roosters and other types of poultry are not permitted. Residents may keep up to seven hens for personal, non-commercial use, but must first obtain a permit from the City.

The ordinance outlines several requirements related to permitting, coop design, and property standards. Coops must be enclosed, predator-resistant, and located in the rear yard, with limits on size, placement, and visibility from neighboring properties or the street. Additional provisions address sanitation, food storage, nuisance prevention, and ongoing compliance, including inspections and permit renewal. Residents interested in keeping hens are encouraged to review the full ordinance and ensure all requirements are met before applying.
